About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Monroe, Louisiana, Catfish Charlie's is a beloved seafood and Cajun restaurant that offers an authentic taste of Southern hospitality and flavors. Specializing in American and Cajun cuisine, this takeout and dine-in spot passionately serves up fresh, hand-breaded seafood that dances on the palate with genuine Louisiana flare.

The menu at Catfish Charlie’s is a treasure trove of Cajun-inspired delights, boasting favorites like the Whole Fried Catfish Basket—a generous, golden-fried one-pound portion of farm-raised catfish, perfectly crisp and tender inside. Seafood lovers will find joy in the Fried Oysters, juicy and lightly battered, or the rich and creamy Shrimp Alfredo and Shrimp Etouffee, dishes that deliver deep, comforting flavors with every bite. For a truly Southern experience, the Shrimp & Grits and the spicy, smoky Jambalaya offer satisfying ways to savor the region’s culinary roots.

Starters are not to be missed here: the Fried Pepper Jack Cheesesticks are a crispy, gooey treat, hand-breaded to golden perfection and bursting with melty cheese, while the Fried Onion Rings captivate with their sweet onion interior wrapped in a perfectly crunchy, seasoned breading. The house-made Seafood Gumbo bowl, rich with andouille sausage, gulf shrimp, and oysters, embodies the soulful essence of Louisiana cooking, warm and robust with each spoonful.

Beyond just flavor, Catfish Charlie’s prides itself on the freshness of ingredients. Customers like Brian Freeman, who hails from South Louisiana, praise the restaurant for its “nice clean catfish and shrimp plates” and the freshest fish around, emphasizing not just the quality but the care taken in preparation. The dining atmosphere echoes this care, offering a welcoming, down-to-earth space where you can indulge in Southern comfort food that feels like home.

While some may note that seasoning can be on the lighter side—Sam McClanahan mentioned the cheese sticks and onion rings were delightfully textured but underseasoned—this often suits those who prefer subtlety and allows the true flavors of the seafood to shine through. Meanwhile, visitors like Diamond Glover rave about the generous portions and fresh, excellent food, further testifying to Catfish Charlie’s reputation as a must-visit when in Louisiana.

Whether you stop in for a quick takeout or a relaxed sit-down meal, Catfish Charlie’s brings the vibrant, bold flavors of Louisiana’s Cajun and seafood heritage to your plate with warmth and authenticity. It’s a taste of Monroe you won’t forget.

The food was hot and fresh, but it was very underseaoned for me. I ordered the combo appetizer of cheese sticks and onion rings. The texture was awesome on both, but there was no salt in the breading. The mild taste of the cheese paired with no seasoning made that a dish that I would not order again. The onion rings were slightly better. I'm a person who doesn't like a lot of salt, but there was none in these dishes. I also ordered the Catfish D'arbonne. The catfish was fried well but underseaoned as well. The crawfish cream sauce was very tasty. There was too much rice for the amount of sauce. The service was excellent. The workers seemed to enjoy working there. There is a charge for using your card.

I was a visitor in Louisiana state for the first time. Catfish Charlie's was recommended to us. The food was excellent. The portions were great for the price. The food was so fresh. We had the catfish and seafood platters. The staff was great. I would go there again if ever I was in Louisiana.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’m from Texas, where we know good catfish, but Catfish Charlie’s in Monroe, Louisiana, completely blew me away! Hands down, some of the best catfish I’ve ever had—perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside, and flaky on the inside. Every bite was packed with that authentic Southern flavor that just makes you want to sit back and savor it. And let’s talk about those hushpuppies—absolute perfection! Golden, crispy, and with just the right amount of sweetness, they were the ideal complement to the meal. You can tell this place takes pride in what they serve because everything was fresh, hot, and made with care. From the first bite to the last, every part of the meal was top-tier. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, do yourself a favor and stop at Catfish Charlie’s. You won’t regret it!

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Monroe. There are other catfish houses in the area but this is the one to go to don’t bother going anywhere else. The fish is cooked just right and everything always taste just right. They also offer grilled fish of fried isn’t for you.

I was told I had to try this place since I was new to the area. I had the catfish in which was very good no complaints about the food so that is why I gave a 4 reason I didn't give a 5 was 3 main reasons. 1) $20.00 for lunch for 1 person is too expensive. 2) Since the prices are high I'm under the assumption that they could reinvest into turning their air conditioning down so you do not sweat while you eat. But the food was great without a doubt. 3) One last thing the asking for a tip. I stood in line ordered my food made my own drink, went and picked up my food from the counter, so what service did I receive that deserved a tip? This puts customers in a uncomfortable situation and in many ways it's a scam in my opinion. This is a normal thing for so many places I hate to see a good one do it for their own benefit. But again the food was good.
